![]() The game is incredibly engaging as you invest in your parties well being as well as progression in the map all of which are under constant manageable threat. Had this on my wishlist and picked it up on release hoping for the best. It's a fairly polished and finished game for early access. I put it down for a bit as the content was still light but the amount of updates they make is good. I got twenty hours in the first week I bought it. They can specialize with certain abilities, but what abilities you do get are random for each level up. The three classes have decent depth to them and even level up unevenly (rogues and warriors level up quicker than mages) which felt very reminisce of AD&D. The characters can form love and rivalries, have kids that join you, age, and become different like leaning into their weird and cooky and fun transformations that range from predictable (werewolves) to not (immortal dryad of the woods).Ĭombat is okay, very XCOM and has a lot of nuance and interactable map objects, but I found I used the same moves over and over again and making my characters level up to augment those specific moves. They're adding more of these types of events with every patch, some written by fans. They're random and unpredictable, and even the same choices can be random. The events that happen in between remind me of FTL. The game even at it's highest difficulty isn't terribly hard. To add more: this is more about the storytelling and fun aspects of that rather than the gameplay. You can either start with them or recruit them in midst of a playthrough to save your ass. You can save these heroes to use them in latter playthroughs. Legacy system is the roguelite part of the game. Your heroes age, transform, get maimed as you progress and you can see the dramatic changes. 3 elements, 3 tiers, unique weapons, 1h/2h/sidearm.Īnd last but not least, the selling point of the game imo: Progression. Good preset campaigns which has pretty well written stories. In between narrative is comicbook panel style. Paper Mario-esque design might throw you off but combat is deeper than it looks. My character encountered something between stories and suddenly had a flaming hand as result. My favorite piece are the side events that may alter a characters appearance and abilties. The workshop mods are there but with only a handful to choose from. Didn't get too far into this feature though. You can use them in other stories which furthers their legend status. Your custom heros will build up a small reputation with each story. If a character goes down in battle they have several options which include either dying but dealing one final blow, losing an appendage but surviving the fight, or one final option but I totally blanked on what it was. The gameplay lacks any sort of major animation which isn't a issue for me but I could see that impacting some views. The art itself is pretty and quite charming.
